A First-Time Walker, A Lasting Commitment to the Cause- Terry Abate

A First-Time Walker, A Lasting Commitment to the Cause

By Ellen Swercewski

For Terry Abate, a first-time participant in the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation’s Walk for a Cure on October 3rd, taking on the quarter marathon was about much more than completing 6.5 miles. It was an opportunity to honor the many women she knows who have been touched by breast cancer and to help support the search for a cure.

Terry’s journey began when her friend, Sue Gardiner, a 15-year veteran of the Walk, invited her to join her team, Legworks. Although she expected the 6.5 mile walk might take some time, she was pleasantly surprised by how quickly the miles passed. Her first impression was that the event was exceptionally well organized.

Along the route, she was inspired by the groups of people cheering on the walkers and grateful for the many volunteers who provided water, fruit, Band-Aids, and other assistance. She was especially impressed by a volunteer riding a bicycle along the course, checking on walkers and making sure everyone was doing well.

One of the most touching moments came at the finish line when she saw her friend Nancy Shepard. Nancy, who has walked for many years with Pam’s Posse, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and did participate this year. However, her entire family came out to support the Walk, wearing their Nancy’s Network shirts. Seeing Nancy and her family there was a powerful reminder of the personal stories behind the cause.

Supporting breast cancer research is especially meaningful to Terry, who personally knows three women diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone. Her hope is that a cure will be found soon.

Her message to anyone considering joining the Walk next year is simple:  Do it! Every dollar raised by the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation goes directly toward breast cancer research, and she believes everyone can make a difference. “I’m sure they know someone affected by breast cancer. We need all the help we can get.”

After completing her first Walk for a Cure, Terry is already looking ahead to next year. She plans to return, ready to walk again for the women she honors and for a future where breast cancer no longer touches so many lives.
