TBBCF offers two major supported training events
By ELEANOR MARIANI AND KATE DAVIS

The Walk for a Cure not only supports an important cause but also offers extensive training recommendations and two major supported training events? Those aiming to walk a Full or Half Marathon are strongly encouraged to begin their training as soon as possible. As part of the training regimen, there's an 18-mile walk held in Old Saybrook on August 25 and a 20-mile walk in Mystic on September 14.
These training walks take place in some of the most beautiful areas of Old Saybrook and Mystic, offering breathtaking views. Support vehicles strategically located along the route provide water and snacks to keep you energized. Participating in the walks offers support, encouragement, camaraderie, and a safer environment.

Anne Rochette, who has been organizing these training walks for many years, shares, “We volunteers have the best job on training days! We get to interact with the walkers in positive ways. And the walkers are always having a good time. Camaraderie is a huge benefit of participating in the training walks, and in my mind, the best part for the walkers. They are not walking alone.”
Rayna Dakin, co-chair of the training walks, adds, “It takes the scariness and anxiety out of the walk. And you are building endurance!”
Registered walkers will receive all necessary information about these supported training walks via email and social media announcements, so be sure to register early! For more information about recommended training, go to the Walker Guide at tbbcf.org.
Did you know…….

That there’s a way that you can still take part in TBBCF’s Walk for a Cure even if you have other plans on October 5th ?

It’s true! A Virtual Walk option is available for anyone that wants to take part and fundraise for TBBCF & breast cancer research, but cannot be in CT on Saturday, October 5. It gives participants the freedom to complete their miles in a location of their choice, on a day or days of their choice and to do their miles in a sport that may interest them more, like swimming or cycling.
Maybe you are going to Volunteer on Walk Day…don’t fret – you can do both by registering & participating as a Virtual Walker.
Does this sound like something that might work for you? Here are some more details about the Virtual Walk option:
-Virtual Walkers
- still register and fundraise. The fundraising commitment is $150 for whatever distance you choose.
- are invited, & encouraged, to attend the training walks on August 25 & September 14, 2024. Register early to be sure to get all the information about the training walks.
- receive a 2024 walk shirt for their participation, along with other fun things in their walker packet.
- can share pictures of their experience of logging their miles, with the TBBCF community, by using #tbbcfwalk19 on social media, or by sending pictures to [email protected].
- can create or join a team. It can be a team with all virtual participants, or it can be a team that includes both in-person and virtual participants.
Speaking of Teams…. Did you know - that being part of a team is fun and it helps motivate the participants? Teams can fundraise together, and this helps all participants reach their fundraising commitments and goals. We have more information about Teams in the Walker Guide .click here.
So lace up your shoes, break out your bikes or swimming googles! Take advantage of the wonderful training opportunities and enjoy the journey with fellow walkers as you prepare for the Walk for a Cure.
